Timmy Bibble’s Friendship Club

When I first heard of Friendship Club, I’m not afraid to admit: I thought it sounded like a really bizarre concept that I wasn’t sure would translate well. A Bullet-Hell Party Game? That’s like saying “Hey everyone, play this Japanese game where you’re shooting a lot of enemies in the sky and add some silly humour.” So naturally we’d end up with Cho Aniki… Um, just go to YouTube. We’ll wait right here while you absorb that sight.

Alas, this is not one of those games (Oh thank heavens it’s nothing like Cho Aniki), but instead it’s rather genius. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy of Friendship Club, but not only that, I was lucky enough to be able to get to talk to Nick from Force of Habit.

Friendship Club is indeed a bullet hell party game, but what does it mean in this context? It means that if you fire off a bullet, it kinda bounces. Everywhere. A lot. No really, that’s what happens, bullets stay on screen and it gets harder and harder avoiding them! Couple this with giant fingers from God himself trying to squish you and you’ve got yourself a very silly party game. Silliness that somewhat transcends most and joins indie games like Gang Beasts, which is silly and great fun.

But this isn’t to say that the silliness is bad – It’s done in such a clean way that you can’t help but laugh your head off. I was watching a group of 4 friends play Friendship Club with the Force of Habit team around them… and we were all laughing with them. From the random bullets flying everywhere, to the Smash Bros-esque modes, such as the super speed mode… Honestly, this is a brilliant game to get some friends around to play.

In similar vein to the previously covered De Mambo, Friendship Club is a promising look at what the Indie video game scene has brought us. What’s more, the team of Force of Habit are actually based here in merry ol’ Bristol! When I found that out, I had to get in my words with Nick which can be heard below!

I’m really excited and enthralled that we’ve got such a strong indie gaming scene in England and a growing, thriving scene here in Bristol too! The passion that all of these wonderful indie devs put into their games is honestly worth writing a separate article on alone. I’m tempted to ask the team of Force of Habit, along with some of the other teams I’ve spoken to throughout last week to join forces and give us a nice podcast on indie game development… But not just yet!
