Chance & Counters – A Board Game Café and Bar

What do board games and pub nights out have in common? Well GeekOut of course, but that’s besides the point. I’m on about Chance & Counters, a brand new café and bar that’s opening up near the Christmas Steps in Bristol. They need your help for the last bits of funding; read on to find out more!

At the last GeekOut Meetup, I had the pleasure of speaking to a wonderful guy called Richard who, along with some friends, are looking to run a café/bar in the heart of Bristol City Centre. Bristol is well known for its eccentric tastes in bars, including the micro-bar that’s opened up, the many ale pubs and of course, the very famous “Car-bar”, the Bag of Nails. But with all this said, we don’t have a bar that’s dedicated to board games, even though many do elect to have a selection of games on hand, especially due to the sudden spurt in popularity that board games are currently undergoing.

Chance & Counters are opening up a Kickstarter campaign as of 9am today, so by the time you read this article, the link should work! As such, I thought I’d look over their campaign and chat about what they are aiming to do.

The campaign seems relatively straightforward from the face of it; Raise £10,000 so they can make the place feel like it is a premium establishment from day one. It seems either way, the venue will be opening, but with the extra cash, they will be open and much nicer from the word go. It’s interesting to see they’re sticking local, which is true to the spirit of Bristol, as they are looking to get Konk! furniture, a Bristol-based company. As well as this though, the money will go on making the place look a little bit more polished ready for us all to go into a new venue.

If it’s successful and the venue opens up, we’d like to take some of our GeekOut meets over there to see what it’s like. We won’t be leaving Old Market Tavern any time soon, but we’d certainly look to expand our social group further to try and support ventures like this in Bristol. So having looked at the Kickstarter campaign, I can see that they’re looking at doing a membership scheme that is quite simple to understand. The reason for it: To cover the costs of any broken or missing parts to the games they get in.

Speaking of games, they will have a catalogue of approximately 200 board games to choose from! This is a massive selection, which promises to be a mixture of the classics to brand new indie favourites. It’s quite an exciting prospect to add to Bristol, so I’m eagerly looking forward to the day this place opens. Plus, it helps the staff seem super nice, too. Best of luck to the Chance & Counters team. In the mean time, please do your bit if you can by helping them fund their dreams over on their Kickstarter Campaign. Let us know what you think in the comments below, over on Facebook and on Twitter.

Also, don’t forget to check out Chance & Counters website, their Twitter and Facebook pages as well.

  3. Y’know… good for them. They’ll reach their goal no-sweat at the rate the campaign is going.
And I’m just going to leave it at that; this topic gets me a little bitter.

    • Fair enough, but was that a beer pun (bitter) at the end?! I am feeling left stout! (Couldnt resist!)

      January 11, 2016 at 12:34 pm

      • Considering my last name -is- actually Stout… >_>

Nah, I’ve been wanting to open an eSports Tavern for some time and can’t get any support for it. It’s really grating on the nerves.

      • Ah, thats a shame! eSports is becoming a massive scene, that more of those types of taverns are needed! You would get my support on here :)

      • I agree completely! Time to buy a lottery ticket.
