GeekOut Bristol Meet – July 8th: RETRO Gallery
A blast from the past was had by all of the attendees of the GeekOut Bristol Meet this month. Taking place on Friday 8th, we went back in time to an earlier era of video games, with many appearances from characters such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders and more. With a huge competition taking place this month, courtesy of our sponsors and venue the Old Market Tavern, it was a massive event. Join Timlah for a full run down of what went on!
With the massive competition we had going, you can be sure we had a huge turn out. It was our… second highest turn out! With 61 individual heads counted, GeekOut Bristol meets are getting some serious attention. Perhaps it’s because we’re such a long standing group with good reputation, or perhaps it’s because they know I’m there (hah!), you can be sure that our meetups will keep getting bigger and better as time goes on. On this note, I’m so happy to say that the Old Market Tavern are officially our sponsors now. They always offer us £50 for the competitions and this month, to seriously help us more, they bought some big prizes.
The competition was simply to win at a game of Tetris. The person with the highest score after just one attempt would win. They would be playing on a GameBoy colour, using an original Tetris cartridge. It was a great chance for people to hold onto a bit of gaming history, before the prizes were dished out. The prizes were as follows:
|Position||Prizes||Won by||Score (rounded up to the nearest 1,000)|
|1st||GameBoy Colour + Tetris and 4 other GameBoy Colour compatible games, 3 Steam keys, £25 cash and a GeekOut poster||Patrick Shead-Simmonds||107,000|
|2nd||Tamagotchi, 2 Steam keys, £15 cash and a GeekOut poster.||Ashley Graham||40,000|
|3rd||Tamagotchi, 1 Steam key, £10 cash and a GeekOut poster.||Dom Montarnaro||39,000|
There was a clear winner this month with a whopping 67,000 point difference, however before Patrick had his go, the majority of people had scores between 21,000-35,000. The lowest score was just over 500 points. Thanks to everyone who took part: This took most of the day to orchestrate but I think the competition was a roaring success. I’m happy to have let so many people have a go on a classic gaming device like the GameBoy once again. It’s amazing how quickly muscle memory comes back into play, as you remember games that were played on the device so many years ago. You can get a GameBoy Colour for quite cheap these days, but honestly, it’s all about owning one.
Of course, this is a gallery post, which means you’re all here to see what pictures we took. I’ll be honest, I was promoting the use of a hashtag and I’m glad I did, as a lot of the pictures will come from another source. This month though, I got a few images and here they are:
The rest of our images this month come courtesy of GhostBunny18, who has always been a massive help at our GeekOut events. It’s great hosting these events as it’s clear the community clearly care about GeekOut. They even bought me a cake to celebrate my birthday which had passed recently – That was entirely unexpected, especially since I was trying to find GhostBunny18 to do the Tetris competition! Still, thank you to everyone who attended and everyone who celebrated with us.
But then, when it was all over, on Saturday 9th, a couple of us attended Bristol Pride. Here we are in full celebratory mode:
But now, it’s time to wrap this article up:
Like Jason, we didn’t know what we should think about the ending of GeekOut’s July meet. I mean, simply put, it meant it will now been another whole month until the next event – But never mind! Our next event is already being planned. It’s going to be held on August 13th (a Saturday) at the Old Market Tavern, where we hope to see all of you there. The theme for next month? Steampunk! Thanks as always for joining us, please remember to leave us a comment below, or over on Facebook, Twitter or Reddit.
