Marketing is a powerful tool to have in your arsenal, no matter what your mission is. Whether you are looking to bring people together for a massive meetup, or if you’re looking to share a political message, a good marketing strategy is all you need. At least, it’s a good chunk of the battle, as the other half will be the message you are trying to share. We’re not the best at Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) ourselves, but here are some basic marketing principles which might make or break your campaign.
Whether you are trying to promote your blog or your services, you need to have a purpose before you start campaigning. You can certainly use Facebook, or even Twitter, heck go and use Reddit responsibly too, but have a purpose and a specific way to use them. For instance, if I were to use Facebook to reach out for new customers, I would share what people had said as a way to increase exposure. I might opt to show examples of the services I provide too, but ultimately you need a short, punchy story.
Let’s go through some different social media platforms and how they can all help with your campaign.
We mentioned earlier what sort of things you can do, but first things first, you’re going to need a business page for your campaign to be successful. Considering that there are so many pages out there, you need to stand out from the crowd. Not an easy accomplishment, when everyone is bidding to do what you do as well, to gain your potential share in the market. Are you a video games blogger? Are you a graphic designer, looking to freelance? Whatever your goals for your campaign, your page is your gateway to success here. The conversion rate for ‘likes to clicks’ seems pretty good on Facebook, but you get likes pretty slowly overall.
If you use the advert facilities on Facebook, be sure to stick to your campaign and not go for something else. You can set your advert up for clicks on your website, or for clicks on your advert, or even Facebook likes. All of these are useful, but you should always be clear in your mission. If you want people to come to your website, tell them why your website is useful to them. If you want people to hire your services, what separates you from your competitors? If you can’t answer this, why not ask some of your existing customers? You might gain some valuable insight into your own business!
Ah yes, they say content is king, but if that’s the case then small doses of content might be a little king in waiting. Personally I find Twitter to be the best at drumming up business to business interest, but there might be a simple reason for this. From the bite-sized format, to the visual cues in place, you can digest (or serve up) a lot of information in a very small amount of time and in a space. With its seemingly miniscule character limit, it really is a tricky platform to break out in, but I have a few bits of advice for people just starting out on Twitter.
Don’t think you’ll get thousands of likes overnight; followers and retweets take a long time to cultivate. But if you’re going head first into the platform, be sure to make use of effective imagery. But don’t stop with just your campaign either, as this will get you ignored. Instead, why not reach out to people, or perhaps retweet relevant content for your followers? People want to see that you’re willing to give back, as much as you want to get out of the platform. Encourage engagement through polls, reach out to followers and share their stuff – They might see it as a kind act and may retweet back. For every follower who has 100 followers, that retweet button is a way to be seen by those 100 as well. Also if two people following you retweet, then if they share and followers, those followers see it twice – twice the exposure!
Oft-forgotten, but equates to a significant population of the internet, Reddit is a sort of aggregation site, collecting info from all sorts of sources that Redditors put up. Different niches have different subreddits, which in turn can lead to you getting your own. But Reddit has rules regarding the quality and quantity of links, with subreddits having their own rules for users to adhere to. Find a niche you’re related to, post your article up and discuss. Don’t forget to chat to others about their own articles and take part in the conversation. If you hit the right niche and deliver great content, expect a flood of traffic!
Naturally then, the most important place to consider is your own website. Full of information that you put up, the people who consume the content most are your friends, fans and followers. Of course, your website is going to need a strong marketing strategy in order to be found, but chat to other website owners. Consider trading links, but be picky, as bad links do more harm than good. If you can get chatting to a bigger website, then you might be in with a chance of winning over the search engines of the internet. Consider how much people pay for marketing, when sometimes a nice conversation is all you need! Remember; if you don’t have a website yet, you can get one for free with many companies.
