We’re fast approaching the new year, with Christmas in just 5 days! Every year, us gamers look forward to something new, something exciting and something completely different. However, we’re also a bunch of people who are rather fond of habits, so sequels and expansions upon franchises are always much desired. In 2018, we’re going to get some interesting new IP, along with some awesome new sequels. Similar to last year’s post about what we should look forward to in 2017, it’s time to look towards 2018 and see a few games we really should be throwing our wallets at our monitors for.
I swear I’m going to knock my monitor over if I keep doing that.
First of all though, a slight dishonourable mention:
Let’s start off with a title that’ll make Joel very happy indeed; Psychonauts! If you don’t know about Psychonauts, it’s a title created back in 2005 by Double Fine Productions; the genius of Tim Schafer, someone who is somewhat of a marmite in the gaming industry (although even those who dislike his games will typically admit how important he has been to the industry). So, since 2005 the faithful fans of the original have been waiting for this to be continued – and now it looks like it’s going to come true. It has all been thanks to the power of crowdfunding, through Kickstarter. So keep your eyes peeled for this one, as a lot of people helped bring this title to life.
UPDATE: Since writing this article, it was reported that Psychonauts 2 was pushed back to 2019!!! I respect them wanting to have extra time, so here’s hoping it’s going to be a great experience when it comes out.
Coming seemingly out of nowhere, Biomutant looks like a very strange new IP by THQ Nordic, the company responsible for the Darksiders franchise, along with Alan Wake. It features this anthropomorphic, er, mutant creature, which you get some semblance of control over the appearance of. You fight other mutant-like creatures, using a gun and a sword as you see fit. We’ll likely find out more very soon, so keep your eyes peeled, as this game looks great. It’s a breath of fresh air!
Dragon Ball Fighter Z
If you’ve not heard about this, chances are you didn’t get the priviledge of watching EVO 2017 – But don’t worry; This is a fighting game you can definitely get excited about! Love Dragon Ball? Don’t we all?! Coming along at the end of January 2018, this game was announced back at EVO 2017. People have been excited to see this one come out and admittedly I think this might be a 2D Fighter I could invest in. From Ki charged attacks, through to the devastating Kamehameha, all of your favourite Dragon Ball moves will be featured, along with lots of characters up to Dragon Ball Super. Seriously, if you’re a Dragon Ball fan, you need this game.
You are a doctor; thus you want to save people. But you’ve now been turned into a vampire. So the people you save are the same as the people you must feed on to survive. How do you cope? That’s the dilemma you’re presented with, in this title which somewhat reminds me of the legendary Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines. This is another one of those brand new titles that sounds great in principle, so really looking forward to seeing what this game has to offer us. It won one of the Best of E3 awards according to Wikipedia, which makes it a pretty impressive start to a brand new IP.
There aren’t enough vampire games out there!
Monster Hunter World
Yes, Monster Hunter makes its return with the 6th iteration of its core game series. Get ready to go on out there and slay as many monsters as you possibly can – and this time, be prepared for it to be a massive world in which cross-region play is finally here! This also marks the franchises first foray on the battlefield that is the PC Market, so get ready to see an influx of new players joining in with existing Hunters worldwide. These games are always hugely popular, so fingers crossed we get another stellar entry in the franchise!
That’s it! There are going to be plenty of other games released along the way; some of which may be even better than the ones I’ve listed here. What do you think 2018 holds for us in the land of video games? Are you excited for the very near future, or do you think some franchises are going on too long? As ever, share your thoughts and opinions below, or over on Facebook and Twitter.
