Last year, I wrote an article on the Cosplay Trends for 2017, in which I managed to get 4 out of 5 right, so I felt like I needed to try this type of article once again! Yes, with the new year nearly on our doorstep, it’s time for us to look to the future. We’ve had a lot of really cool new trends appear this year, so what do you think we’re going to see in 2018? Well, there are some trends I foresee coming to light.
Far Cry 5
Hold tight, this may be a hell of a ropey subject, but please note I’m not citing that people should do this one. Nor am I citing that people shouldn’t do this one. I feel this one is going to happen regardless, because of what it is.
This is a very interesting case; Far Cry 5 has been met with a lot of criticism, over the plot and the setting. This is a game, where the villains appear to be mostly white American people. As such, this game is going to divide a lot of people.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from Cosplay over the years, there’s little fear over freedom of expression. Expect this to be the politically-charged cosplay choice of 2018, because trust me when I say this, anyone cosplaying these will be criticised for being political. If you don’t know of the controversies, I’d seriously recommend you check out this part of the Far Cry 5 Wikipedia page (true as of 24/12/2017).
My Hero Academia (Boku No Hero Academia)
This is a sure-fire one.
This year, we saw the meteoric rise of My Hero Academia (MHA). It went from a cool anime, to arguably the most popular anime of 2017. It went from something great to something truly special; boasting an excellent narrative, cool and likable characters and, of course, PLUS ULTRA! With all this said and done, I’m not going to be surprised when I see more MHA cosplayers. Heck, the first GeekOut Bristol Meet of 2017 is simply titled “Hero Academy”, in hopes that people will embrace the spirit of the story and setting of that frankly brilliant series.
Can anyone tell that I really like it?
With Deadpool 2 coming out soon, you can tell there are going to be plenty of Deadpool cosplayers once more. They will all be coming back out of retirement, so be prepared for yet another round of guys with their “bants” going around “breaking the fourth wall”.
Urgh, I shouldn’t be so cruel.
Deadpool is an awesome character to cosplay, allowing plenty of people to have a sort of freedom in having a bit of fun; but there is a line you shouldn’t cross (just a small warning for anyone out there reading this, thinking “I should be Deadpool and act cheeky to people!”) However with the release of Deadpool 2, it’s going to feel like 2016 all over again. Either way, it’s a simple enough costume as people are able to pick up the suits pretty cheap – So be preapred for all of the Deadpool cosplayers to return; with varying degrees of props. From swords and signs, to a rubber chicken, you’ll have to expect everything!
On a similar vein to Deadpool, Black Panther is another costume you should be able to expect appearing here or there. Another comic book come to life, Black Panther has been given new life, thanks to the power of Hollywood and boy, does the film look good? Of course, this one is a bit of a wild card, as the costume is pretty intricate. Still, it’s an incredible looking outfit, which mostly is dependant on a body suit. The rest is sculptable relatively easily, so as long as the Cosplay can make a good body suit, they should be fine!
Here’s hoping the movie goes well!
Dragon Ball FighterZ is coming out next month, which means there’s going to be a bunch of Fighting Game fans come around, enjoying their time dressed up as their favourite Sayians, Humans, Androids and more. But, Dragon Ball FighterZ isn’t the only reason that people may be donning a Son Goku outfit, or a Beerus suit (Okay, I’ll be bloody amazed if I see a Beerus outfit, but a guy can dream!) Yes, with the near conclusion of Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power, this anime series is still on the forefront of everybodies minds.
And that’s all for my predictions for Cosplay Trends in 2018 – What do you think? Other than The Avengers, can you think of any other probable Cosplay trends for next year, or do you think it’ll mostly be the same affair? Do you think there will be plenty of new trends along the way? As ever, let us know your thoughts and opinions below, or over on Facebook and Twitter.
