There’s no secret about it; Marvel and DC have been throwing films at us like it’s nobodies business. We’ve been getting cinematographic treats, heroes we didn’t expect to see on the big screen and more. In 2019, this trend is looking to continue once more, as we’re going to get more superhero and supervillain movies which’ll be worth checking out. However, we’re not only getting comic films, but indeed more great geeky films to look forward to in the coming year. As such, I thought I’d take a look at some of the upcoming releases and talk about the ones that I think should be interesting to us geeks.
Let’s start with arguably the biggest one on this list; Avengers: Endgame should be the continuation of a massive storyline which has been going on since 2012. Whilst we’ll not spoil the events of the previous Avengers film, in case you haven’t caught up with them yet, it’s fair to say that Endgame is going to hit home for a lot of fans of the franchise – Especially with all of the questions going into this film following the events of Infinity War. Undoubtedly a must-see next year.
With a release date around March 2019, Carol Danvers, or Captain Marvel as we better know her, is a superhero who gets into fights with aliens. To briefly explain it, Skrulls are the bad guys, meanwhile Kree’s are a race of noble warrior heroes – At least in the words of Nick Fury and Carol Danvers themselves. Skrulls are a bunch of alien shapeshifters who are hellbent in invading Earth. The Kree look to defend us against the Skrull invaders, which is where Captain Marvel herself steps in. Featuring Brie Larson as the titular Captain Marvel, this one has been discussed for the past five years.
Star Wars Episode IX
We can’t really say too much about Star Wars Episode IX, except that if the previous 2 episodes are anything to go by, then we should be onto a winner. We’ll be getting back our cast, including Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn and Poe – And if you’ve not caught up with this set of films, then you really should go and catch up with them. Still, this one’s going to be the last one you’ll likely watch in 2019, as it’s scheduled for a December release date.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
February 2019, the hugely popular Lego Movie gets its first sequel. It’s hard to believe it’ll have been five years since the original Lego Movie, but there we go. The sequel will feature the Duplo invaders who have laid waste to Bricksburg. Emmet returns as the master builder that he is, along with his unwavering optimism, whilst everyone else have become less optimistic due to the events of what’s happened to their home. Still, Batman’s back in this, so it can’t be all that bleak, right?
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Boasting arguably the most impressive trailer of the bunch of them, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is looking to be an epic film. Humanity must find the Titans, in an attempt to save themselves and the world from destruction from the likes of King Ghidorah. Currently on course to be crashing into our cinema screens at the end of May 2019, this one is going to be a massive monster fight that you don’t want to miss out on. The characters look really impressive in this one.
Pokémon Detective Pikachu
When the trailer dropped for this one, I’m not going to lie, I was equal parts stunned and exasperated. I didn’t know whether I should love or hate it – and I think I’m going to love it. It’s such a corny, cheesy looking film, with such a funny concept, that I can’t help but love what it is. If you’ve not seen it before, check out the above trailer for the Detective Pikachu movie coming out in May 2019. What do you think of Mr. Mime’s fleshy face, or Pikachu’s extra fuzzy fur? Okay, at least it makes sense. This one is a must see for any Pokemon fan – Or even if you’re just a fan of silly, funny movies. I’m definitely going to see this one!
There are plenty of other great films coming out in 2019, including the likes of Shazam and a new standalone Joker film which looks fantastic. The above aren’t listed in any particular order, however these are notable ones I think people will definitely be talking about next year. I, for one, am equally excited and terrified to watch Detective Pikachu. Are there any particular films in 2019 you’re most looking forward to?
