Professional wrestling is often considered to be an art. Other times, it’s just really funny. They sometimes try to touch upon some serious issues, or they decide to go completely off the rails and just have fun. No matter what though, wrestling is entertaining and I love it to bits. Every year, I end up writing something to do with wrestling and today is no different. On the build to Wrestlemania 35, here are the stories that have captivated me the most, as well as the two which have sort of left me wondering why it’s being done.
Daniel Bryan vs Kofi Kingston for the WWE Championship
Let’s start off by addressing one of the most prominent figures of the show. Daniel Bryan is an incredible wrestler, Kofi Kingston is an incredible wrestler. Daniel Bryan has gone on a massive journey, becoming hugely hypocritical in his path to the top. He stopped being one of the top faces, transforming into an incredible heel. But now he faces an opponent who has been met with the same situation he himself went through, many years ago. Daniel was prevented from being the top guy, being told he was nothing more than a B+ player. Now, Daniel tells Kofi that he is in fact a B+ player too.
This story has come about in such a natural way, it’s been beautiful to watch it unfold. Sometimes, in story telling, all you need is an incredibly over babyface – and that’s what Kofi Kingston is. When he put on a performance and a half a few months ago, his journey to Wrestlemania began… And it’s only taken him 11 years to get to this point, not through lack of trying, or lack of effort – But rather a lack of opportunity. Now Kofi has a chance to prove why he deserves to win that strap.
Becky Lynch vs Charlotte Flair vs Ronda Rousey in a Winner-Takes All Triple Threat for the RAW and SmackDown Women’s Championships
That’s a massive title.
Anyway, Becky Lynch has been on fire since she turned heel last year… However, that’s quickly made her back to being a face. No longer complacent, Becky is out there to take what she wants, which is her main event spot at Wrestlemania. It’s been a strange journey, often filled with criticism from the fans (and often rightly so). What was going to be Becky Lynch on her way to face Ronda Rousey, one on one, it’s ended up with Charlotte Flair added into the match. Charlotte has managed to win herself the SmackDown Women’s Championship, just two weeks before Wrestlemania, so now this is a triple threat for both titles.
This has been ridiculous. Just watch the above brawl. It’s hilarious, it’s great. It’s everything we love about wrestling.
AJ Styles vs Randy Orton
I think this is the only other match I want to specifically talk about – AJ Styles vs Randy Orton is a quiet feud which will be incredible. When Randy Orton is interested in a match, he is one of the best workers in the industry. Everyone AJ Styles works with gets a good match, because the man is just a wrestling machine. This is a dream match, which has been incredibly understated. The promos have made this one worthwhile.
Tonight, NXT TakeOver is back.
Tonight will be an excellent night of wrestling. If you have access to the WWE Network, it’s honestly worth watching, as the wrestling on display will be amazing. The NXT Championship is currently vacant, after Tommaso Ciampa had to vacate due to injury. Now, his former ally turned rival, Johnny Gargano, is up for his chance at the gold. But his opponent is the Undisputed Era’s Adam Cole… Baybay. The women’s match is a fatal four way, between Shayna Baszler, Kairi Sane, Bianca Belair and Io Shirai. My money’s on Shirai for that one. The NXT Tag Team Championships are being defended, the North American championship is up and also the NXT UK Championship, between my current wrestling favourite, Pete Dunne and the imposing Walter.
I’ve only really got one entry for this. The show itself should be fantastic, but in terms of a match, the only match I’m not looking forward to is…
Baron Corbin vs Kurt Angle
Please note, I am actually a fan of Baron Corbin. I think his in-ring work is fantastic, all things considered. He has a wicked moveset, with an incredible finisher and two really unique signatures move (the baseball slide, then rush back in and Deep Six). However, he is definitely not the right pick to be Kurt’s final opponent. Kurt Angle has been a figure in wrestling for years now. An Olympian gold medalist turned professional wrestler, Kurt has been a household name for years now.
We are all hoping to see John Cena come back, to be Kurt’s true final opponent, as Cena debuted against Kurt. We’ll see, I’m sure WWE have some shenanigans planned here.
