Happy Easter everybody!
Easter eggs are a huge part of video games. Some games do so much with their Easter eggs, it’s hard to not be impressed that it’s not a separate part of the game – It’s an explanation. From some games having giant heads, through to little tidbits of information you’d not find any other way, it’s no surprise that Easter eggs are so much fun. Video games over the years have found so many ways to hide these little events, as well as cleverly hinting at their existence. Some games thrive off the Easer eggs, some of them hide them as well as they can. Today, I’d like to share my favourite video game Easter egg.
I was tagged by Matthew over at Normal Happenings as part of his regular Daily Inkling articles. The prompt read as follows:
What is your favorite Easter egg in a movie, TV series, book, video game, or other form of media?
Well, I’m not one to shy away from a fun question which can lead to discussion, so here’s my favourite video game easter egg.
The Lair of the Rat Man – Portal 2
Portal 2 is a game that has been discussed to death and for good reason. It managed to reinvent the action/puzzle genre and it was, let’s be honest, pretty brilliant. The game consists of our protagonist Chell, who needs to escape from the Aperture Science portal testing facilities. Using her newly acquired portal gun, Chell navigates through a series of tests (puzzles) to get to the next. She keeps going until she can get to the end and thus escape. However, she is not the only person to ever have been trapped in the Aperture Science test labs.
Hidden throughout the puzzles are the Rat Man lairs. The Rat Man was a guy who was clearly stuck in the test facilities, in a similar way to Chell was. He was an employee of Aperture Science who needed medication to keep himself sane. Unfortunately, he went off the deep end. So he started to make dens in the Apperture Science test facilities. It was here that his scribblings, his incoherent ramblings could be seen and, later, heard. He wasn’t quite as insane as everyone believed him to be, but he definitely was a derranged man.
The best part of this Easter egg? It keeps coming back. If you play the game through, there are various points throughout the game where you can encounter a Rat Man lair. Oh… And then there’s the one with his (disturbing) voice track.
Now that I’ve shared my favourite Easter Egg with you, it’s time for you to share your favourite Easter Egg with us. Did you also enjoy the Lair of the Rat Man? Did you think this was an underwhelming pick, or did you think this was the right one? As ever, remember folks, the cake truly is a lie – Unless GLaDOS says otherwise.
