Picking a puzzle game in this day and age is hard; there are so many different puzzle games out there, with varying degrees of messing around with “the meta” and conventional views of what constitutes a puzzle. One such game is Baba Is You, which sees you take on the role of a little sheep-like creature called Baba. You move around and push obstacles, but your main goal of the game is to win. How do you win? Well that depends on what the rules of the level is… And rules aren’t set in stone in this game. Sometimes, to beat a level, you have to change the rules a bit. Intriguing? It certainly caught my attention!
Skipping my usual review format for this game, as there’s basically no story and it’s simple enough to talk about, this game revolves around a little character called Baba (and sometimes other characters such as Keke). Baba is you, which means that you, the player, are Baba for the purposes of the level. However by moving around a grid-based world, you must figure out what the rules of each level should be. Just because you are Baba at the moment doesn’t mean you should always be Baba if you’re looking to win.
This may sound like nonsense, but basically you are given a bunch of words of which you need to reorder to find the solution to the level. Being that there are different variables involved here, you may change who you play as. Some of the words are effectively objects, then there’s a conjunctive word such as “Is” or “And”, then finally there’s a rule word which defines how that object will behave. For instance, Baba is You. Flag is Win. Rock is Push and Float. These are all different things you can do in game.
The joy of this game is it takes the idea of computer logic and contorts it into a fun little game. What’s even better is the OST is beautiful to listen to, even with how simple it is. The game has a simple vibe about it, from the somewhat “old school” graphics, without it being retro. The backgrounds are beautifully basic, on levels where backgrounds are a thing, of course. It’s great fun in that it’s a game where less is more. Right down to the concept of letting you mess around with the rules of each level.
A fun little puzzler which you can pick up for a little bit over a tenner on Steam. I’d highly recommend grabbing it if you like puzzles, but be warned: Some of the puzzles are tricky! If you like to do logic puzzles, this is the game for you. If you’ve played Baba is You, share your thoughts in the comments below, or on Facebook and Twitter.
