GeekOut Video Gamers & Next GeekOut Meetup

Join me as I look forward to the next GeekOut Bristol Meetup, which is happening on May 8th. Always fun, never dull, the GeekOut meetups have been going for over a year over on Meetup and a year and a half over here on GeekOut South-West! Oh how time has flown by!

It’s creeping up to that time, where we get together for another GeekOut Bristol Meetup! If you’re in Bristol and want to meet up for a few pints, or to play some board games, perhaps have fun at my expense as I attempt to wear a costume, then come join us for more frivolity and geeky banter. Plus, we’re bringing back the well received GeekOut £20 Challenge, where this month, we will be sharing our geekiest music in a format that we can all be diplomatic about it.

The next GeekOut Meetup – And some chat about the website…

Don’cha just hate it when you’re trying to arrange a meetup in a pub and that pub closes early every time? Have you ever had that happen to you? It looks like it’s time to look for a second pub of choice, then! Also we discuss how the website is going and ask you – what do you want to see from us?

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today, I get the opportunity to chat to you all about the next GeekOut meetup!

Our meetups have been happening consistently, (I.E every month without fail,) since October 2013. Those who were here for this websites humble beginnings will remember that I said my first meetup consisted of just me and a friend, sat in a pub and chatting about all there was to chat about in geek culture. Once we joined up with Meetup, everything changed. We were recruiting people left right and centre. It seems there is a need for geek meetups in Bristol and guess what? There’s over 300 people on Meetup alone, who are willing to join in with the GeekOut meetups. Wow! Thanks to each and every one of you, I think we’re outgrowing our current venue (slowly).

GeekOut Meetup March

Last night, I announced the next GeekOut South-West meetup event happening in the usual spot of the King William Ale House.

As winter slowly disappears, we’ll be able to start venturing out more, able to get to more venues and do more things… But since it’s still cold out, let’s keep warm inside of our regular venue and let’s play games, chat about geek culture and let’s just generally GeekOut together.

I wanted to use this post to also thank each and every one of the GeekOut South-West blog readers out there. Joel and I have been working hard to produce content as regularly as we can, with events all across the UK and with us working with so many communities out there, we’re delighted to have met some awesome people. I’ve met some of you, the blog readers, as well as some incredible people who just prove why geek culture should be celebrated, not shunned.

Come join us for some drinks and chats!

For this next meetup, we hope to meet at the King William Ale House on Friday 6th March, which is a bit earlier in the month to usual – but that’s because the following week, I will be off to EGX Rezzed. Expect some articles in the build up to our exciting time at EGX Rezzed!

For this event, I will be going in Cosplay, so… Yikes. Meeting in cosplay is entirely optional, however! Other than this, we’re hoping people will bring whatever their favourite geeky interests are with them. For the video gamers we’re hoping to see some portable consoles. For the card gamers, bring their decks along and board gamers their board games. For the literature fans, bring their works or bring their books – comic guys bring their comics. Tech guys show us the latest in tech that you’re after! Let’s share and explore all different aspects of geek culture!

We’re undergoing a major shift behind the scenes here at GeekOut South-West. We hope that when the evidence of our shift finally kicks in, you’ll all be satisfied with what you see and get. We’re nervous, but we’re also incredibly excited by our secret possibilities. We’ll not divulge this information yet, not because we like being secretive, but because we want to excite you without promising what could potentially be impossible to deliver. Nothing is impossible whilst our amazing readers are around, so thank you for just being there. Our journey is still quite fledgeling… But we hope you’ve enjoyed every step of the way so far.

From such small and ambitious beginnings, where me and my co-worker attended the first GeekOut meetup to such a dismally low number of attendees (… Just us!) to the 260+ members of GeekOut South-West today… Honestly, the mind boggles as to how great you all are. You are the real power for us providing more content; as cliché as that is to say, it’s true.

Thank you

Do you have any suggestions for our future meetups? Do you know of any events we should really make a trip out to? What do you want to see us cover more of? Also what do you think our secret project might be? As always, comment below, on Facebook or on Twitter and until next time, take it easy GeekOut readers.

Jungle Speed

Occasionally for my meetups, I like to buy a new board game to introduce to the well played collection I appear to have amassed.

I mean let’s think about it: If you have a monthly party where the party plays out exactly the same way each time, but just with a few other people, it has to get relatively stale for the host. So I decided whilst I was London Anime and Gaming Convention to go ahead and buy myself a new board game. I approached a dealer who was selling a lot of board games on the stalls closing hours and he said “You’ve gotta think fast, we’re packin’ up over here.”

GeekOut Meetup 10/01/2015

We’ve been running our meetup events for well over a year now guys. Can you believe it? I know I’m still struggling to come to terms with the fact this little concept has turned into something as big as it has. With an event having happened every month without fail, the meetup group is looking stronger by the day.

We have people from all walks of life join us, be their background in development, or as a shop assistant – I’d like to think no one has felt excluded from the group so far. I’d go as far as to say that I reckon they came to the group for different reasons too. Did curiosity strike people who have heard about us, or were the geeky people who came along to the events simply look for a compadre in their geekdoms?

Upcoming events

Hi everyone, Timlah here for another quick update about some of our upcoming GeekOut South-West events, as well as other things that are going on in the land of GeekOut.

The Christmas season is heavily upon us and here at GeekOut South-West, we’ve been making the most of the festive season with tinsel and a very bad looking Christmas Calendar… But at least we have a Christmas Calendar, right? If you’ve somehow missed it, then go check the front page of GeekOut South-West as soon as you can!
