I think it’s worth reflecting, especially when you’ve had a history like we have. Today I’d like to just tell you a tale on this cold winter’s day, to let you know that just because we’re not going to be around in the new year, nothing can stop you. Want to run your own events, similar to the GeekOut way? Want to make an impact on your local community? Perhaps you just want to make some great friends? Well then, read on for what we did and how we did it all. I’ll be discussing the setup prior to GeekOut UK, a quick summary of our history and how we got going.
Ghouls, ghosts, monsters and foes, no matter what type of horrific creation you are, this month’s meetup is for you. For the night of All Hallows’ Eve is fast approaching, so let’s get together for a night of board gaming and of course, fancy dress.
Today is GeekOut Bristol Meet, taking place from 2pm at the Old Market Tavern. One thing we love to do here at GeekOut, is provide some unique themes for the events. This month’s theme was more to get people chatting about technology as a whole. As such, to get people chatting, I started to create some very basic little infosheets about a couple of pieces of tech throughout history. Check out our pieces – and let us know if there were any amongst these that you didn’t know about!
Those of you who have followed us for a while will be keenly aware of our love and usage of Meetup.com, a website which brings people together via very clever marketing. New groups get great emphasis and you can see all Meetups people have signed up to, giving much needed exposure for all groups. However, in December 2017, Meetup.com took an interesting turn in design and methodology.
We’ve certainly started to reach the end of life for our humble little website, but no matter what, we’re going to keep on growing and getting more and more people to join the cause. In case you’re wondering what happened to plans such as the new website, this article addresses those developments and hopefully provides answers for the future of our community. We’re going to keep on growing, is the jist of it, but if you’re a fan of what we do and were curious as to what we’re up to, let us tell you!
Y’know what? For a first try that wasn’t bad at all. Quite the reverse in fact.
Let 30th March 2017 go down in history as the day we finally got round to bringing GeekOut to Shrewsbury! It sounds like we had a lot of competition for the day, and certainly lots of curiosity if not overwhelming attendance, but who cares about numbers when everyone had a damn good time? It’s worth mentioning that Shrewsbury does not want for board gaming groups, but for the first meeting there’s nothing wrong with falling back on familiar territory.
The party started at noon in the basement of the Shrewsbury Coffeehouse, which was a little warm, extra air-circulation will certainly be brought in as the weather gets warmer, but damn if those brownies aren’t worth it. (more…)
Up there in the skies! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s just the GeekOut Bristol Meet attendees flying over to the Old Market Tavern for a night of fun, games, drinks, discussion and much, much more. But of course, not everyone knows what we get up to during our meetups, so if you’re new to what we do, or if you’re simply curious about what’s going down this month, then join us today for a quick chat about what’s new, what’s not and what’s hot about this upcoming meetup.
Part of the committment I signed myself up to when I made this website, was to bring events to local geeks. I wanted to do it as much as I could; but time and money is a major issue. Not to mention the fact that venues are typically tricky for special events. However, middle of last year, we moved away from our first venue into the Old Market Tavern – and we’ve had a hell of a time since then. As such, I’m always looking for ways to bring everyone together for a fun time… And there’s one time of year that can be amongst the loneliest for all of us, yet also is a time for celebrating.
