GeekOut Bristol Meet 08/05/2015

This past Friday, I took to the Old Market Tavern, donned my Oskar outfit and started proceedings in the most proudly geek event of Bristol.

Well, we’re slowly but surely making our way through the year. With Kitacon not too far off, a convention I’m really looking forward to, now seemed like the opportune time to find out more events and conventions that are going on throughout the year. But before we deal with all of that, I took to the Old Market Tavern, donned my Oskar outfit and started proceedings in the most proudly geek event of Bristol.

GeekOut Meetup March

Last night, I announced the next GeekOut South-West meetup event happening in the usual spot of the King William Ale House.

As winter slowly disappears, we’ll be able to start venturing out more, able to get to more venues and do more things… But since it’s still cold out, let’s keep warm inside of our regular venue and let’s play games, chat about geek culture and let’s just generally GeekOut together.

GeekOut Sam

I wanted to use this post to also thank each and every one of the GeekOut South-West blog readers out there. Joel and I have been working hard to produce content as regularly as we can, with events all across the UK and with us working with so many communities out there, we’re delighted to have met some awesome people. I’ve met some of you, the blog readers, as well as some incredible people who just prove why geek culture should be celebrated, not shunned.

Come join us for some drinks and chats!
Come join us for some drinks and chats!

For this next meetup, we hope to meet at the King William Ale House on Friday 6th March, which is a bit earlier in the month to usual – but that’s because the following week, I will be off to EGX Rezzed. Expect some articles in the build up to our exciting time at EGX Rezzed!

For this event, I will be going in Cosplay, so… Yikes. Meeting in cosplay is entirely optional, however! Other than this, we’re hoping people will bring whatever their favourite geeky interests are with them. For the video gamers we’re hoping to see some portable consoles. For the card gamers, bring their decks along and board gamers their board games. For the literature fans, bring their works or bring their books – comic guys bring their comics. Tech guys show us the latest in tech that you’re after! Let’s share and explore all different aspects of geek culture!

Rezzed Logo

We’re undergoing a major shift behind the scenes here at GeekOut South-West. We hope that when the evidence of our shift finally kicks in, you’ll all be satisfied with what you see and get. We’re nervous, but we’re also incredibly excited by our secret possibilities. We’ll not divulge this information yet, not because we like being secretive, but because we want to excite you without promising what could potentially be impossible to deliver. Nothing is impossible whilst our amazing readers are around, so thank you for just being there. Our journey is still quite fledgeling… But we hope you’ve enjoyed every step of the way so far.

From such small and ambitious beginnings, where me and my co-worker attended the first GeekOut meetup to such a dismally low number of attendees (… Just us!) to the 260+ members of GeekOut South-West today… Honestly, the mind boggles as to how great you all are. You are the real power for us providing more content; as cliché as that is to say, it’s true.

Thank you

Do you have any suggestions for our future meetups? Do you know of any events we should really make a trip out to? What do you want to see us cover more of? Also what do you think our secret project might be? As always, comment below, on Facebook or on Twitter and until next time, take it easy GeekOut readers.

GeekOut Meetup 10/01/2015

We’ve been running our meetup events for well over a year now guys. Can you believe it? I know I’m still struggling to come to terms with the fact this little concept has turned into something as big as it has. With an event having happened every month without fail, the meetup group is looking stronger by the day.

We have people from all walks of life join us, be their background in development, or as a shop assistant – I’d like to think no one has felt excluded from the group so far. I’d go as far as to say that I reckon they came to the group for different reasons too. Did curiosity strike people who have heard about us, or were the geeky people who came along to the events simply look for a compadre in their geekdoms?

Upcoming events

Hi everyone, Timlah here for another quick update about some of our upcoming GeekOut South-West events, as well as other things that are going on in the land of GeekOut.

The Christmas season is heavily upon us and here at GeekOut South-West, we’ve been making the most of the festive season with tinsel and a very bad looking Christmas Calendar… But at least we have a Christmas Calendar, right? If you’ve somehow missed it, then go check the front page of GeekOut South-West as soon as you can!

For another full day of sci-fi and fantasy fun, it’s time to go and get our book love on and this year, BristolCon is looking bigger and better than ever!

It seems there’s going to be a panel for everyone, there’s a section dedicated to the Yōkai in Japanese culture, which is awesome for me! As well as that, there’s going to be some amazing readings by really talented authors and writers, panels on how to get into writing and much more. What’s more, the GeekOut South-West social group are going there to investigate, look around and chat! Come say hi to us!

GeekOut South-West meet 10/10/2014

It’s true ladies and gentlemen, we have now finished another month of meeting in a pub for a geeky gathering filled with gleeful giggles and gags. With so many new members and people travelling from London and Shrewsbury for the event, it’s no wonder that these GeekOut meetups are getting bigger and better. I wanted to extend my thanks personally to every single person who came along, so here’s a post dedicated to the recently passed GeekOut South-West meetup.

As always, we started things slowly. By the time we had gotten to the pub after our meal at Sticks & Broth, we knew it was going to be a brilliant night. With so many people there before we arrived, we could just feel the night was going to be a big one and that it was. For the record, we did arrive before the 7pm start time… Just. There were so many people who came to join us, even if it wasn’t for the full night – the spirit of GeekOut is strong! It’s a gathering of like-minded individuals who revel in all things geeky.

Big Geek Bristol Meet 12/09/2014

Welcome back once again everyone to another quick update on how the social events of GeekOut South-West have been going.

Our meetup page has 100 members now. There are a few others who frequently come along but aren’t signed up on the meetup website, but officially we do have over 100 social group members! A big thanks to each and every single one of you: You all make this worthwhile.

So how did our last one go? I didn’t get many pictures, actually – but we had events and a £20 cash prize competition! Ooh.

One of our newest members who also happened to have a really nice camera. Still, he didn't expect this..!
One of our newest members who also happened to have a really nice camera. Still, he didn’t expect this..!

We started the night in the usual way: Get some tables together. Get the drinks in. Get re-introduced and get introduced to new members.

We sat around and just spoke for a fair bit of time. A good sign that the night would be filled with conversation! This carried on for an hour when suddenly one of our newer members brought out his game of One Night Ultimate Werewolf. If you’ve not seen this game before, check out this video from YouTubers Board Game Replay which discusses and then shows a game of One Night Ultimate Werewolf!

Once the game was over (for the record, I wasn’t a Werewolf), we decided to do the competition. We had some emotional “sales pitches” of their books and possibly the most plausible sale of the children’s book Mr. Grumble. Alas, the prize was given out to the most passionate pitcher, even though we were all in stitches at the reading of Mr Grumble. Someone also announced they had 50 Shades of Grey but thankfully they didn’t.

We then moved on to Cards Against Humanity. But just as we were about to: We got kicked out of the pub! It was late, we weren’t kicked out for being bad, it was just late at 11pm. So we decided to move the group over to The Crown which was very loud, but we managed to shout out Cards Against Humanity stuff, much to the bemusement of the security staff. I think the guy didn’t know whether to laugh with us, at us, or be disgusted. Either way though, he kept laughing!

Then we moved over to The Mothers Ruin, where we finished our nights. Oh man, did we finish it on a high or what!? I gave out shots of absinthe to everyone to end the night. Except for a few of the members who decided to stay out even later than 3am, but that was their choice.

Thank you to everyone who showed up. The night was memorable for many reasons and I hope to see you all again soon.

The next GeekOut Social Event is on October 10th @ 7pm, upstairs at the King William Ale House. More information to follow.

However, if you want to see what our next event is going to be like then why not check out our Meetup page?

Meetup at The Bag of Nails pub

Good evening all.

The next GeekOut South-West social is almost here!!

If you’re in Bristol or in the surrounding areas tomorrow, Friday 18th, at 7pm (official start time) – Then come swing by The Bag of Nails pub! We’ve got a large gathering snapped up from Meetup and we’ve got a good number of people who aren’t on the Meetup joining us, too.

Want to see what we’re on about? Well, just come on by. There’s no set agenda. No need for name tags. Just look for the guy wearing his Edward Elric cloak, white gloves and a hat.

That cloak!
That cloak!

We’ll be easy to find, with the Meetup logo printed and ready to go, too. I’ve added a few geeky additions to our adorable sign! I’ll even give it a name one day. Signy. What an inventive name for a sign.

I am becoming rather eccentric these days. I’d be scared if someone ever thought I wasn’t eccentric, to be fair with you all.

Details

Let’s geek proudly and visibly, let’s talk geek in a pub!

GeekOut South-West @ The Bag of Nails (141 St George’s Rd, Hotwells, Bristol BS1 5UW)
5pm “pre-GeekOut” time. 7pm official start time!

Please note, there is a chance we might be a bit too big this time around for the venue. If that’s the case, keep an eye on Twitter (Or the Twitter feed on this website) – And on the Meetup page. I will try to keep it all updated so that people know where we are at what time. We don’t want to disappoint anyone!

Other things you can do tomorrow

You can absolutely join in the 1001-Up Twitch stream tomorrow! Come meet the 1001-Up crew, come play a game with us but be forewarned: It’s not for the easily offended. We’re going to play an online game of Cards Against Humanity. If you join us, we will pull no punches. We will only do what the cards tell us! Cards Against Humanity starts at 2pm!
