UKGE 2017: Events and Entertainment

This weekend, Chris (catharsisjelly) and I were at the UK Games Expo. We had two incredible but very different experiences, while Chris went around doing what one should at a board games convention – playing board games with people in the industry, playtesting, and finding new games to add to his library – I was apparently preoccupied with wandering around and chatting to people and attending the events. Weird, right? It’s like going to an anime convention having hardly watched any anime…

I love my geeky events, and I think now I’ve seen both sides of the equation, from those that are very simply temporary shopping centres for those of a geeky inclination, all the way up to those that are wall to wall entertainment by the fans and for the fans. UKGE definitely strikes a balance of both, a great place to experience and buy those things you could only ever see on the internet before, as well as keeping up a decent timetable of discussions, Q&As, and performances from big names of the industry. Despite them becoming my main focus I never got to see it all, but here’s the short version: Continue reading “UKGE 2017: Events and Entertainment”

WWE – Why I’ve Been Pulling For Seth Rollins

So far, this year has been an incredible year for the WWE. They’ve introduced a lot of brand new talent to their already sizeable rosters. From the developmental circuit down in NXT, to the main stage on Monday Night RAW and Thursday Night Smackdown, the amount of potential the wrestlers have and display is superb. Now however, it’s time to look past all of this and talk about some of these talents. For this article however, I want to discuss one man… Seth ‘freaking’ Rollins.

Professional Wrestling is an entertainment medium that splits the masses, for it is entertainment shrouded in mystery, intrigue and deception. It’s public knowledge how some matches are carried out, thanks to wrestlers talking about their sometimes harrowing experiences via biographies and other mediums. However, in this day and age, these men and women who put on phenomenal shows are slated for not being what some call true fighters. Perhaps they’re not a true sense of the word fighter, but honestly, I consider these individuals some of the toughest and bravest people on the planet, doing high-risk stuff just for peoples enjoyment.

At the time of writing this article, I’m sat here having just finished watching the Night of Champions Pay-Per-View on the WWE Network, as I was really excited to see it! By the time you read this article, the results will be done and we’ll see where the company are going with their stars. From the recent addition to indie sensation Kevin Steen (now known as Kevin Owens), to The Black Sheep, Braun Strowman, the WWE is filled with truly talented and gifted individuals. One man who has been at the forefront of the new wave of talent is the current WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Seth Rollins. He retained his World Heavyweight Championship last night, but lost the United States Championship.

He’s been the archetypical heel (bad guy) for quite some time: Cowardly, conniving, cunning heel who wins by any means necessary. He’ll take a dirty win if it means he gets to retain his title, but during the SummerSlam Pay-Per-View, he beat John Cena to gain the United States championship. This is an interesting position Seth found himself in, as he took on not only Cena for the United States rematch, but also he has to fight the WCW legend, Sting. As many websites stress, this was a way to potentially make Seth turn face (good guy) and make him a future star, burning bright. Either that, or because of the way he’s been booked, he’ll be remembered as nothing more as the guy who sleazily got his way through every victory.

Whatever your view point on the state of wrestling, Seth Rollins or anything of this kind, there’s one thing that’s actually undeniable. The presence of WWE has gotten much larger and much more in your face than it was previous. In the early 00’s, we had what we call the Attitude Era, with figures like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Chris Jericho and more. These men and women of the squared circle were charismatic and all around incredible athletes, who endured unimaginable pain. They did so just because they enjoyed putting on a show by putting their bodies on the line.

Move on some years and we’re in the 2010’s. In 2015, there are more gamers and geeks than ever in the wrestling industry. Heck, the World Heavyweight Champion himself is a geek and quite a big one. In the video below, you can see the Champion sat with fellow wrestling star, Xavier Woods, enjoying a spot of Turtles in Time. But this wasn’t just a one off YouTube video. No, he’s been in Smosh videos (as shown above) and more.

Well known for going to Comic Con with other WWE Superstars, Seth Rollins is a man that geeks of the world can get behind. Couple this with the fact he’s a phenomenal athlete, he’s living proof that geeks can make it in the world, no matter what they choose to do with their life. As such, I am rooting for the biggest bad guy in the company, Seth Rollins. I can’t wait to see him become the biggest babyface and eventually, Seth ‘the man who runs the place‘ Rollins.

Have you seen Seth Rollins in action? Did you see Night of Champions and want to weigh in on your opinions for the nights results? Hopefully you enjoyed this tangent away from our typical articles, but if you have any comments, leave them below, or over on Facebook and Twitter!

The Week In Geek – 22/09/14

The Week In Geek

Welcome back to The Week in Geek, our weekly summary of all our favourite pieces of nerd news. Tim and Joel keep watch for stories that interest us, but let us know if there are any stories you’d like us to talk about next week!

Bendgate

Ok, we’ve all heard about this already. The short version is that iPhone 6’s are structurally weak enough to bend is subjected to a minimal amount of stress. You can destroy one with your bare hands, or by putting it in tight pockets. Leaving aside all of my own pro-android view points, let us take this time to bask in the hilarity that is a bendy phone:

Seriously, Google “Bendgate” because the responses from corporations are hilarious. Somehow it’s funnier when businesses start ripping on each other than when the gleeful masses of the internet do it. Corporate trolling! It’s a thing.

Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Joss Whedon’s series to support the Marvel Cinematic Universe enters it’s second season this week, and already the show is taking a turn for the dark. Those of you who watched the first season to the bitter end [SPOILERS] will remember that following the events of Captain America: Winter Soldier, S.H.I.E.L.D is officially dissolved, but unofficially operating under the directorship of Agent Coulson to try and route out the forces of Hyrda. [SPOILERS OVER, you can come back now] No character has been left unchanged, the plane is gone, and things are more intriguing and action packed that ever before.

The first season was slow to really get started, but was an excellent introduction to the show at large and a great accompaniment to the film franchise. It’s storyline compliments those films that set it up and have been released alongside it (although I’m not sure it stands up on it’s own merits so well) and goes that little bit further into Marvel lore that may not have seen the light of day without the smaller-scale project. Look forward to Agent Carter, another supporting series that follows S.H.I.E.L.Ds beginnings that will premier in January.

Adobe buys Aviary

Aviary is a photo-editing platform for mobile devices, it is also a creative SDK of sorts. It’s no major surprise then that Adobe, the guys who run Photoshop, are interested in the platform that is Aviary which last year alone saw over 10 billion photos be processed through its various apps.

So why is this interesting at all? Adobe are doing something known as “the Creative Cloud”, a cloud-based creative software system where you pay a set monthly fee (£27.34 per month for the first year) and get access to all of Adobes software. It’s aimed at enthusiasts, hobbyists and small to medium sized businesses. It’s a more affordable way to run programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and more! Of course, in the long-term it’s more expensive than out-right buying the software, but if you don’t necessarily want to own the software for some reason, then this is a chance to get the whole works without buying the software.

So where does Aviary fit in?

Aviary delivers SDKs (Software Development Kits) to mobile platforms, which allows the creation of creative software. So integrating this in the Creative Cloud makes sense, as it means Adobe are also able to support those who want to work with the Aviary SDKs (which is now being renamed to Adobe Creative SDK.) It seems like a smart buy for Adobe, best of luck to the employees of both companies!

Tiger & Bunny review

Hello one and all,
So, today I want to talk about one of the most recent anime I have seen, Tiger & Bunny.

Tiger & Bunny art
A rather serious looking cover, for what’s actually a very charming (and clever) series.

Tiger & Bunny is phenomenal. I mean let me go through this with no spoilers for you all. A western styled superhero story in anime form. Surely, this is the best of both worlds. This anime truly is.

Some incredible artwork, with truly amazing characters that aren’t forgettable. The story primarily follows Wild Tiger, an ageing hero who is known for being a bit of a destructive machine. He always means well for everyone, selfless. He is partnered with a younger hero who has the same power as he, super strength for 5 minutes. This younger hero, Barnaby Brooks Jr (aka Bunny), however, is out for glory and revenge for his parents deaths.

As the story progresses, each of the heroes personal stories are touched and you see their rivalry also extends into a strong friendship. With plenty of bad guys and some amazing blend of a serious superhero story and fun comedy, Tiger & Bunny seems to have the blend perfect. This is a pretty tame anime, however it is absolutely wonderful and will bring in fans of western comics as well as anime/manga fans, too.

It’s not particularly long at 25 episodes, which means you could finish it in a few days if you watched it back to back. Ultimately, you can watch the prequel to the series which is a feature length film (a spectacular one, at that) and this gives you a great start into the series. Now, maybe in future I will have to consider cosplaying Origami Cyclone… Maybe.

I give this series 5 out of 5! Top marks for the first review, can’t be bad, no?

DISCLAIMER: These are my views alone. You are welcome to comment and add to the discussion, but my views stand as above!

Origami Cyclone
Oragami Cyclone, great design, great character.
