Gamer Question of the Month: Dec ’17

We were asked by the lovely team over at the Later Levels if I would like to take part in doing a monthly Q&A, to open discussion about video games amongst bloggers. If you’re interested in joining in the discussion, leave us a comment below, or reach out to Later Levels. It’s been a few months since we last took part in one of these here on GeekOut South-West, but as ever we’ll be sharing what the question of the month is, as well as what our answers to this question is and our justification for the answers. We’ve not been involved in the past few, but hey, we’re back! Development of some projects is taking longer than expected, so here’s a chance for us to kick back and enjoy some hypothetical questions – This is the question of the month:

Which video game character would do a better job than Santa?

Gamer Question of the Month: Jun ’17

We were asked by the lovely team over at the Later Levels if I would like to take part in doing a monthly Q&A, to open discussion about video games amongst bloggers. If you’re interested in joining in the discussion, leave us a comment below, or reach out to Later Levels. Every month here on GeekOut South-West, we’ll be sharing what the question of the month is, as well as what our answers to this question is and our justification for the answers. We unfortunately missed last months question, as we were deep in development of some projects – However we’re back and this is the question of the month:

Which video game contains the most surprising plot twist?

A lot of games have plot twists that you really see coming, some games have plot twists you feel are going to happen, but just aren’t what you’d expect. I thought of quite a few, including the most fantastic would you kindly? scene in BioShock 1, which naturally has ended up on the poll (see below).

“Come and get me, loser! Spankety spankety spankety!” – Earthbound

Anyone who has played Earthbound will be aware of how the game ends, as it’s not exactly a hard game to beat. You play through as Ness and companions, as you fight through funny enemies, such as the New Age Retro Hippy who likes to measure the fight with his ruler. Whilst the game is colourful and cute, suddenly it turns dark and nasty, as it turns out that Porky/Pokey Minch, a boy who lived next door to you, has been helping strengthen a being of pure hatred, Giygas. The game gets really dark if you read into it.

What is your favourite plot twist in all of gaming? Got an answer for us, or do you think one of the picks of this ever expanding group of bloggers is the best choice? Let us know by voting in the official poll below.

That’s it from me this month, but as always these posts are made to get us chatting. I must ask you: What do you think is the most surprising plot twist in video games? Do you think this one sits up there, or is it no good to you? Remember to check out the original question over on Later Levels, then don’t forget to vote for your favourite Easter Egg over on this poll. Finally, leave us a comment below, or over on Facebook, Twitter or Reddit.

Gamer Question of the Month – April ’17

What is the best video game Easter Egg?

This has been the toughest Gamer Question of the Month so far for me. Before this months question, we’ve had the Greatest Soundtrack and the Hardest Game. Those were pretty clear to me, as they were pretty obvious from my memories. But this one was a question that made me seriously think about it – There are so many really good Easter Eggs, that it was hard to choose just one. When I thought abut what an Easter Egg actually was, I decided there could only be one joke that was so silly, that I can’t help but chuckle whenever I see it. I now present to you, my favourite Easter Egg:

“There are no Easter Eggs up here. Go away.” – Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

It’s a simple easter egg which anyone who understands the concept of an easter egg can have a giggle at – Easter eggs are in-jokes left by the developers, usually for fans to find. For instance, in Monkey Island 3, there’s a dead pirate with a button that reads “ask me about Grim Fandango”, another game by the developers. Meanwhile, Rockstar took the easiest path to an easter egg. They decided to hide a message somewhere you can only get to by jetpack that tells people there’s no easter egg there. Simple, effortless, but very funny. Now you should “Go away!”

That’s it from me this month, but as always these posts are made to get us chatting. I must ask you: What do you think the greatest Easter Egg of all time is? Do you think this one sits up there, or is it no good to you? Remember to check out the original question over on Later Levels, then don’t forget to vote for your favourite Easter Egg over on this poll. Gamer Question of the Month: Mar 2017

We were asked by the lovely team over at the Later Levels if I would like to take part in doing a monthly Q&A, to open discussion about video games amongst bloggers. If you’re interested in joining in the discussion, leave us a comment below, or reach out to Later Levels. What Game Has The Best Soundtrack?

The next few paragraphs will be from the GeekOut South-West team – All giving their take on the above question of the month.

For me this one was a really easy pick, I mean I’ve ranted and raved about this game and it’s music for a very long time. I even wrote a guest article back in 2015 regarding this exact subject and I still mentioned this game. It’s one of those games that has a soundtrack so good, that not only do you enjoy it, but the guy who made the soundtrack (and he’s made a lot) went on record to say it’s his favourite musical score in any of the franchise.

Final Fantasy IX – Timlah

Final Fantasy IX is a game I’m playing through on YouTube at the moment, which means that I hear it’s music a lot right now. It’s melodic, it’s simple and most importantly: It’s a fantasy score like no-other. It’s clear Nobou Uematsu went to town on this one and he enjoyed it. There’s joy in the happy moments, such as “Zidane’s Theme” which plays as he’s commandeering an airship to take to Lindblum. There’s suspense in moments, such as “You’re Not Alone”, where Zidane is fighting alone, only to be joined by his friends. It’s clever, intense and passionate music.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 – Joel

It was a hard decision to make but of all the incredible soundtracks I know and love, I have to go with my first love, Heroes of Might and Magic 3. The incredible classical score made every faction so much more unique, give each a dramatic feel and personality, brings up the pace of combat, and slides into the background effortlessly. It was the first title to make me sit up and pay attention to the level of talent being thrown into the gaming industry, and it’s set my expectations in the years to come.

That’s it for this month’s responses to this question – What did you think of our answers? Do you have any games you’d consider “The hardest game in the universe, ever”? As always, leave a comment below, or over on Facebook, Twitter or Reddit. If you wanna see who else has been writing, check out The Mental Attic and Later Levels today.
