We here at GeekOut South-West like to use words. We like to write words down and share words with you. Sometimes other geeks like to share words that don’t even exist – Not until they’ve put them down. There are plenty of made up languages out there which are awesome to listen to, or are downright ridiculous. This week, we’re going to check out our Top 10 Fictional Languages.
Sometimes, the villain likes to get a laugh in. Infrequently, the villain gets the last laugh, but when they do get their laughs in, you know you’re going to be etched with their echoing laughs for a long time. We wanted to honour those bad people who wanted nothing more than to show us how much they enjoyed messing with our heroes, in this week’s Top 10 Evil Laughs list.
It’s far too cold outside, but I’m still feeling warm from adrenaline – That’s probably because we’re being chased by hordes of ice and snow monsters! People fear the cold, but it is somewhat beautiful. There’s something about the seductive allure of the snow that makes you want to venture out into it… What am I talking about? I don’t wanna go out there! You never know what manner of cold creature will kill you; but we’ve created a Top 10 compendium for these Ice and Snow monsters.
Wrap up warm, folks! (more…)
It’s December 1st everybody, which means we’re legally obliged* to start spamming you with Christmas every second of the way. Welcome to our Top 10 Geeky Christmas-Themed Stories.
*We’re not really legally obliged to do this, we just felt like it.
We have something to declare: We didn’t really look into the word ancient closely enough, until after we had written this week’s list. Ancient declares that it’s not only from the past, but indeed it’s also not in existence any longer. So, we took some creative liberties this time, by declaring that from today, this list has gone from ancient aliens to very old aliens. Hah! We managed to evade disaster again. Anyway, read on for this week’s list. (more…)
There’s no question that a good science fiction film typically has to feature some highly intelligent and likable AI characters. For nearly a century now, AI on our screens has gotten more and more common, from a robot that is a good friend and sidekick, to those who chug beer and smoke cigars. All in all, artificial intelligence has gotten more commonplace in the cinema and even on our TV sceeens, so what is it that we love so much about our robotic companions? I decided to dig a little bit deeper into the sci-fi genre for a look into the history of AI in movies.
We were very excited about NASA’s recent discovery of organic matter on Mars, stronger evidence than we have ever had of the presence of life in the red planet’s history, and perhaps even now. And sure, that life is nothing more complex than a light dusting of bacteria, but it’s hope for a future off-world, and even more incredible, it cements the notion of alien life. That’s life within our own solar system, so it’s no Faster-Than-Light travelling alien sapience that look like somebody’s been gradually improving the same sloppy prosthetics job over the last couple of decades, but it’s a start.
Science fiction writers have considered the possibility of how our interaction with alien life might go. Though the real tragedy is that the War of the Worlds destruction-by-disease is the most likely outcome, we can dream. Here’s a rough breakdown of the more optimistic possibilities. (more…)
Ah soundtracks, they’re like music to my ears… Well that’s because they are, as when you first sit down to a movie, it’s quite often that you’re assaulted by this wonderful collection of instruments and score. The composers often go by unappreciated in a film, but is it fair? In this Top 10, we’re looking at our personal favourite film soundtracks, some of which have been immortalised for a very long time. Put your headphones on, folks! (more…)
Sometimes I travel a fair distance to attend things that might be of interest to our community; but this weekend I’m attending an event right on my doorstep here in Bristol. Yes, it’s time for Bristol Comic Con which takes place this Sunday 8th April and GeekOut Media will be attending to document the occasion.
