Quick Website Update

Hey all, without lying about it, I had nothing planned for today as I’ve been out with our friends at Later Levels this weekend. Was awesome catching up with them all, so this post is literally just going to be a very short update on the website, what sort of directions we’re heading in and over to you. Basically, this is just a short catch up post, so I can also catch up with sorting other bits of the website out.

Professional Writing Update 1: Entered A Short Story Competition

At the start of the month, I mentioned that I was going to get into professional writing and blogging. This month, I’ve taken my first steps towards that goal. I’ve gotten myself a new blog, where I talk about writing. I also have taken the plunge, written a short story and entered it to a short story competition. All in all, it’s been a busy month, but not as busy as I was hoping I would have made myself. Still, a start is better than no start, right? Read on to see what I’ve been up to.

Our Vision Going Forward

GeekOut South-West has been going for five and a half years; soak that in for a moment. We’ve been around long enough to see groups, events, website all come and go. We’ve been around long enough to reach a point where we’re established, some people call us reliable and we often get plenty of conversation around how much good we do for everyone. That, to me, is something I’m incredibly proud of. However, sometimes, you have to take a step back and really think about what your vision for something is. What has it been all this time? Has it changed? Today, I’m going to explore our vision for the rest of the year and beyond.

Our Reflection on 2018

2018 has been a year in which Joel and I have worked exceptionally hard – And I think every single one of you will have had a similar experience. You’ve all likely done something, or something happened to you in this year, which has changed you or changed the way you do something. This year hasn’t exactly been a barrel of laughs all the time, but it’s also not exactly been a bad year for us. I’ve got some fond memories from this year, which I hope to use to propel us as a website, us as a group and even myself as a creator further. Today, we’re just going to share what we think we’ve achieved this year – and hopefully you’ll be as proud of us as we are of the work we’ve put in.

What Is NORAD Tracks Santa?

Anyone who has any form of interest in Christmas and how it’s applied in the digitial age, then you may not need to look much further. NORAD Tracks Santa is a programme that has been around since 1955; run by the North American Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD offers a way to show people where Santa Claus is in the world. This turned out to be one of the harder questions in this month’s GeekOut Bristol Meet, as it turns out that whilst most people knew of some form of Santa tracker, people weren’t sure on the name… Or why it even exists. As such, I thought it’d be fun to look at what NORAD Tracks Santa is, how it came to be and what it does today.

GeekOut UK – Website Update #6

Whilst an update on our new website might not come to the forefront of your minds, I certainly feel like it’s been a while since I’ve had a significant update for everyone. Indeed, I usually only really provide an update when there’s been a big change and this time, I guess there kind of has been a big change to the new site. There’s quite a few changes to it in fact, which I think warrants a bit of attention.

Celebrating Five Years of GeekOut South-West

Holy smokes, I knew this year was my fifth year running this blog, but on Wednesday 19th, it was officially the anniversary of the website. Hurrah! No, there’s no time for cake, as I thought that was a perfect excuse for me to chat about everything that’s happened with us. The good, the bad (although there’s not really a lot of ‘bad’) and of course, the outright amazing. All in all, it’s been five years of ups, so expect to see a lot of gushing about how excellent this has been… And hey – We’ll chat about the meetup and what that means to us, as well as future plans.

Our Design Philosophy

One thing I have had a number of compliments about are our posters, our website’s appearance and all of our design. Honestly, whenever I hear good things about these, I actually chuckle and shrug a bit. “Nah, you’re just saying that,” I’ve often said to myself. Well today, I thought I’d share with you why our scheme is black, grey, red and white. These four simple colours, or shades, are each hugely important to our identity. Here’s how and why.

GeekOut South-West: Our Story So Far

You know, this may seem like a relatively simple article to write about, but it’s made me think back and reflect a lot. We’ve been going since 2013, meaning that in September of this year, we’ll officially have been around for five years; half a decade. In this time, we’ve had to learn a lot about producing content of all forms. We’ve written regular articles, we’ve produced videos, we’ve made little in-jokes, which have become more (see Gordon the GeekOut Goat). However, in our time, we’ve had to learn how to bring about a balance of being content creators, community organisers and being our own tech teams. If you’ve ever wanted to do something similar, here’s a reflective post on what we’ve done over the years.

GeekOut South-West: What’s In Our Future?

We’ve certainly started to reach the end of life for our humble little website, but no matter what, we’re going to keep on growing and getting more and more people to join the cause. In case you’re wondering what happened to plans such as the new website, this article addresses those developments and hopefully provides answers for the future of our community. We’re going to keep on growing, is the jist of it, but if you’re a fan of what we do and were curious as to what we’re up to, let us tell you!
